Russian Travel confident for 2002
The Autumn was a very busy time for all travel suppliers involved with the Russian Travel Market. With some promotions taking place before September 11th and most exhibitions being held after this tragic day all were awaiting the results from this market.
The news is very positive. Russian clients are proving to be resilient to adverse travel related news and are continuing to travel in increasing numbers.
This does not mean that they are oblivious to Foreign News. The crowds that appeared outside the American Consulate in Moscow on September 11th (including myself) and the days after showed great compassion and consolidation with the American people which was especially poignant with the memories of the bombs that destroyed entire apartment blocks in Russian the summer before.
As tourism has developed in most countries it has also developed a pattern of reactions to disasters. With the Russian Travel Business still in it's infancy the market response has been one of concern but not of panic.
Whilst no figures are currently available the general opinion is that the Winter business from Russia will again record substantial growth with many destinations again showing double digit increases. Winter Sun, Exotic Destinations and the Ski Market have seen marked increases despite many new visa requirements.
Many Tourism Regions are now relying heavily on the Russian market for their annual budgets, these are now being joined by many newcomers looking to fill the shortfalls created by these tragic world events.
Travel should be the pathway to peace, it is important that any historical animosities be re-considered and understanding achieved through International meetings. Travel company can achieve this.
